Dirt, Grass & Stillness...

When was the last time you played in the dirt?

Yes, I mean the damp, worm- and beetle-filled dirt.

This week at my grandma’s, I helped garden. I edged her front entrance, then dug my hands into the soil—feeling every root, beetle, and worm. Barefoot in the grass, I felt free.

It was my only focus - there was no music, my mind didn’t wander, I was just there.

With how busy life can get, and in this era where it’s hard to do anything without some form of digital device, it reminded me of the calm when we were kids. Playing in the dirt - running barefoot - the biggest concern being “is it snack time yet?”

It made me wonder: at what point did life shift, and running barefoot, and playing in dirt, suddenly become an unacceptable thing? What triggers the child's wonder to fade out? Do we really have to give it up?

Taking those moments, as kids, allowed us to breathe, talk to the birds, and connect with nature in a way that our minds couldn’t comprehend. Things felt magical and alive!

If I can encourage you to do anything, it would be: take a breath, talk to a bird, connect with nature and reset yourself…,trust me, your body, emotions and mind will thank you!
